The assigned reading from the BIM handbook was interesting because it gave a good overview of all that can be done using BIM. I personally did not have a lot of prior knowledge about BIM so this chapter was helpful in giving me basis for any other article I read about BIM. I was surprised about all the differences between BIM and other parametric modeling software. It was also interesting to me how BIM could be used in post design with respect to shop drawings.
The second article I read discusses how BIM can also be used to further Green Building. BIM can be used to perform building infrastructure projects faster, more economically, and with less environmental impact. In green building specifically, BIM allows projects to use less physical prototypes and allows architects to incorporate sustainable design procedures earlier in the design. Engineers can also analyze models that minimize the use of energy and material toxicity. The article also talked about how BIM can allow the architects and engineers to manage productivity past the project duration. This would allow owners to realize the benefits of sustainable design features through the entire lifecycle of the project. This article was very interesting to me because prior to this I had not though about how beneficial BIM could be to green/sustainable design.
