BIM-Week 4

In the assigned reading, the capabilities of BIM and products are discussed in an effective manner. It is emphasized that BIM tools are very complex in comparison to earlier CAD tools. Even though there are lots of BIM tools having various functions, I believe that multi-user environment, interoperability, and drawing generation are the most outrageous capabilities of them. It is very important to allow multiple users to create and edit parts of the same project from a single project file. In this chapter, it is also discussed the strengths and weaknesses of many popular software. Personally, I don’t consider myself an expert on any of the BIM tools, however I have used Revit and AutoCAD in order to complete my assignments. I think Revit has a very outstanding user interface compare to AutoCAD and it provides much better visualization of tasks than AutoCAD does.

The first additional article that I have read is called ”Tightening up with BIM” written by John D.Wagner. He emphasizes that BIM technology is sweeping through the residential architecture design/build community as a torrid pace. He indicates that 50 percent of today’s home designs are in BIM systems, and maybe even a far greater percentage than this. Furthermore, he explains that through the application of BIM and components home builders will be able to build customized homes at production speeds and double-digit margins.

The second article that I read is called “Building Information Modeling” written by Chuck Eastman. In this article, it is mentioned that BIM decreases the spatial conflicts in a building model and it is also able to estimate the cost and material to be selected. Additionally, the author indicates that BIM tools are very different from CAD tools. BIM supports on-line simulation of a building’s operation and their processes provide better building products lower costs to owner.
